I am the green-eyed monster.
You would never understand
For you and I were carved from different soils.
You come from sunlight and open doors,
and I, from shadows that swallow their keys.
You stand on ground that was granted and gifted,
laid smooth before your feet,
while mine buckles beneath me
like earth that refuses to let anything bloom.
I am the green-eyed monster.
You shan’t pass me with a grin.
Your dreams rise with ease,
mine wither before they ever reach the air.
If you speak of your success,
the ones that fall into your hands like ripened fruit,
know that mine were frost-bitten long before dawn.
I am the green-eyed monster.
Your success is my downfall,
For each step you take feels borrowed from my destiny.
And when I fall..
(which I always do)
I reach for your leg.
not to destroy you,
But because the depths are lonely
And I have never known a world
That did not pull me under.
For my eyes are green,
greener than envy, greener than rot
a garden that never bore a single flower.
My brows are arched with stories
I learned too young
and my smile forgot the shape of joy
long, long ago.
I am soft,
I am tender,
My heart is still foolish enough to hope.
It beats warm and inviting,
even as my gaze cuts through you, and only you.
you, with your given skies,
your effortless growth,
Your victories that cost you nothing.
So, Yes.
I am the green-eyed monster.
But you could never understand why.
For when life bars your windows
and bricks shut your doors,
Jealousy becomes the only window
That still opens.
And so, my eyes stay green
till the very last.
I am the green-eyed monster
not born,
but made.
