Hair has a significant cultural, social, and personal importance at Westwood High School. It’s not just about style for most Redhawks, hair is a way of self-expression and identity and symbolizes African American history.
Hair is challenging, different types of hair take various types of products. African American hair has always been a way of creativity. Even at Westwood High School, hairstyles like Afro, braids, twists, and locs are a fashion statement and a way to make money. In Westwood High School, many young students make a profit just from doing other African American hair. Fourteen-year-old Autumn Covington who does hair states,
“I love being able to make art out of hair. Hair is a way I make my own money and test my different abilities.”
Historically, African American hair has been a target of judgment and misunderstanding. Some people might view African American hair as ghetto in public areas.
Little do people know, hair is history. During slavery, slaves used hair as routes and ways to escape. In the 1900s, hair started to bloom. One of the most significant hairstyles to the black community is known as the “Afro”, which originated from Tribal Africa. This style is what started it all.
Hair care is also important in the Black community. Hair is significant in cultural, social, and personal importance in Westwood High School. It’s not just for style for most Redhawks; hair is a way of self-expression and identity and symbolizes African American history.
Hair care is also important when it comes to the Black community. Not all hair is the same, there are different types such as 4b, 4c, and 4a. Hair care lines such as Camille Rose and Mielle are also very effective for the Black community. Without products made for African American hair, hair would not be as thick and healthy as it is today.
In the Black community, hair is a strong way of self-love, creativity, history, and cultural awareness. It is a way to show diversity in culture. Hair is a generational thing; it tends to have more significance over the years.
